Nvidia reportedly buying Hugging Face for $12.9B after $7B offer was rejected last year
Servola-Journal · reddit · 2026-08-27
Per The Information (unconfirmed by either company), Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for about $12.9 billion — nearly double the $7B offer HF rejected less than a year ago.
Key points:
- HF's value is distribution, not silicon: it's the default hub where OpenAI, Google, Amazon and Anthropic publish and download open models — and all four are building custom chips to cut Nvidia dependence
- The deal doesn't touch those chip programs, but it puts Nvidia inside the pipeline every rival's open-model strategy runs through
- The open question: does model availability, pricing or hosting change once the neutral hub is owned by one of its sellers?
