asymco · x · 2026-08-27
JetBrains has released Junie Local, an on-device coding agent designed for privacy and ease of use.
Specs & Requirements:
- Hardware: Requires an M5 Mac with at least 64GB RAM (e.g., the new $2,699 Mac mini).
- Model: Runs Qwen3.6-27B (4-bit) locally, taking up 20GB space.
- Performance: Benchmarked to be on par with Claude Sonnet 4.5 (at 10k token reasoning limit) and slightly below GPT-5 (medium effort).
- Tech: Leverages M5 Neural Accelerator's 8-bit instructions for 40% faster prefill throughput.
JetBrains acknowledges the high hardware barrier but aims to lower memory requirements in the future. It runs entirely offline with no token costs.
