Responding to accusations that Hugging Face is no longer hardware-agnostic and favors NVIDIA, an HF engineer stated:
- Customer Ties: NVIDIA has been their largest enterprise customer for a long time.
- Technical History: PyTorch established CUDA as the primary backend early on.
- Deprecation Logic: JAX was deprecated due to low usage and maintenance burden, not bias; conversely, Apple MPS support was recently added due to rising local AI demand.
- Strategy: The team prioritizes backend support based on community preferences and actual usage needs.
