Paul Dix declares the end of programming: agents will drown out hand-written code
addyosmani · x · 2026-08-27
InfluxDB founder Paul Dix argues we've reached "the end of programming": manually writing code and having colleagues review every line is headed for extinction. Instead, humans will direct AI agents, build harnesses, software factories, and QA/verification systems, reviewing only the final output rather than the code.
His trigger was Bun 1.4's Rust rewrite with over a million new lines of code. Citing a graph from GitHub's Aug 17 outage post showing an exponential climb in code production, he speculates most comes from side and internal non-critical projects. He expects a flood of both slop and well-engineered software no human has read line by line, and says organizational inertia may keep traditional programming alive for a decade while top creators ship without programming in any traditional sense.
