Study Reveals 'Handoff Tax' in Model Switching for Coding Agents

This paper investigates the cost-quality trade-off when switching models in long-running coding agent tasks. It finds that escalating from low-cost to high-capability models recovers less than half the quality gap despite high costs, termed the 'handoff tax'. Downshifting offers better value. The impact of trajectory information on quality varies by direction.
