Game Theory: Increasing Outside Options Can Worsen Cooperation

In repeated games, socially efficient outcomes are maintained when the incentive to deviate is outweighed by future cooperation gains. Increasing outside options ("sovereignty"/leverage) can therefore make things worse by weakening these constraints.
