Anthropic study: 72% of AI conversations remain human-led

Anthropic released a study titled “Human–AI Collaboration at Scale,” analyzing 249,834 real Claude conversations. The research reveals that while AI is used for consequential work, it functions mostly as augmentation rather than full automation, with 72% of conversations remaining human-led. User engagement deepens as stakes rise. Additionally, AI teaches in 67% of relevant conversations. Friction appears in roughly half of interactions but is often productive when users actively repair, challenge, or clarify the model's output. The study concludes that the benefits of AI depend heavily on the human agency and critical engagement maintained during the interaction.
