CoinMarketCap adopts x402: AI agents pay $0.01 per request in USDC for data
kleffew94 · x · 2026-08-27
CoinMarketCap officially announced its crypto data API now supports the x402 protocol, letting AI agents pay per request instead of dealing with API keys and subscriptions.
- Each data request costs $0.01, settled in USDC on Base
- No API keys, accounts, or subscriptions required
- Uses native HTTP 402 machine-to-machine payments: the agent gets a 402 Payment Required response, base64-decodes the payment JSON, pays in USDC, and resends the request with a payment signature to receive the data
The feature is currently in beta. It's a concrete example of the "agents pay for their own data" machine-economy direction.
