Study: Half of Claude conversations involve high-stakes, irreversible tasks

Stanford's SALT Lab analyzed 249,834 real-world Claude conversations, finding that over half involved 'consequential tasks' affecting others or hard to undo. The study shows that as stakes rise, users engage more actively, nearly doubling conversation length. It also explores the tension between AI augmenting human capability versus substituting effort.
