AI uncovers vowel-like structures in sperm whale communication
begusgasper · x · 2026-08-27
A study reveals that a generative model learned an internal factorization of sperm whale acoustic structures. Interventions on this factorization recovered known biological variables and exposed previously overlooked spectral variables. This led researchers to identify real vowel- and diphthong-like structures within sperm whale codas, offering new insights into marine communication.
