IBM Releases Granite 4.2 Local Reasoners Under Apache 2.0 License
lmoroney · x · 2026-08-27
IBM has launched the Granite 4.2 family of local reasoning models, available in 3B, 8B, and 30B sizes, all under the Apache 2.0 license. The series features a toggleable "thinking mode," allowing users to enable or disable step-by-step planning before tool calls to compare performance. All models underwent foundational reinforcement learning for math, science, coding, reasoning, and tool calling. The 8B and 30B models received additional agentic RL training for software engineering, terminal tasks, and search-driven workflows. IBM also released the 470M parameter Granite Speech 5.0 Turbo CTC, a lightweight speech recognizer optimized for fast audio-to-text conversion on laptops and phones.
