No ChatGPT Moment for Robotics: Unitree Loses Nearly Half Its $66B Valuation

TechCrunch reports Physical AI has become one of venture's hottest sectors, with billions raised to apply LLM techniques to robotics. But the risk is showing: China's leading robot maker Unitree hit a $66 billion valuation after its IPO, then lost nearly half of it this week — analysts point to robots still lacking the know-how to do value-creating work despite improving physical capabilities.
Mythic Robotics founder Adrian Macneil said at the Actuate conference: "There will not be a ChatGPT moment for robotics" — ChatGPT's moment came from distribution (zero to a million users in a week), which is far harder in the real world. He's instead waiting for an "Apple II moment" in robotics: a home robot that does useful and fun stuff. The conference has tripled in size since 2023, drawing 1500 attendees.
