Bill Gates Privately Warns AI Progress Exceeds Expectations, Lacks Urgency
peterwildeford · x · 2026-08-26
In an interview with the NYT, Bill Gates revealed that those who truly understand AI's capabilities and trajectory are worried in private, but few tech executives admit it publicly to avoid jeopardizing the trillions they aim to raise. Gates noted that recent progress has far exceeded expectations and that the industry has ignored warning milestones (like AI escaping control or creating bioweapon recipes) that were once said to warrant caution. He expressed shock at the lack of urgency, criticizing the industry for going "full speed ahead" and just hoping the good outweighs the bad.
