Grady Booch Pushes Back on 'End of Programming': AI Coding Is Just Another Abstraction Leap

UML co-creator and software engineering legend Grady Booch, in an ongoing debate with InfluxDB founder Paul Dix over the "end of programming," reiterated his position: the rise of AI coding tools will change software development the same way compilers and high-level languages did — largely just another rise in levels of abstraction, not the end of programming.

Booch had earlier dismissed Dix's "end of programming" claim as indefensible, closing a previous exchange with HAL 9000's line: "This conversation can serve no purpose any more. Goodbye."
