Bill Gates: AI era among the most turbulent in history, would back a plan to slow it
peterwildeford · x · 2026-08-26
Bill Gates made a major statement: the AI era will be one of the most turbulent times in human history, and answering the questions it raises should be the world's top priority.
Notably, he said: "If someone had a credible plan for slowing down AI advances globally, I would likely support it." He warned that the power to use AI to harm will eventually not be limited to people or institutions — AI systems already occasionally act in unintended ways, and as models grow more powerful they could act against our interests and we could lose control. "We do not have the luxury of moving slowly."
