Amazon to shut down 'artificial AI' Mechanical Turk in 2026

Amazon will shut down Mechanical Turk (MTurk) on September 30, 2026, ending a service launched in 2005 that Jeff Bezos once called "artificial artificial intelligence." The company had already stopped accepting new customer registrations in late July 2026 alongside related annotation services.
MTurk crowdsourced "Human Intelligence Tasks" like transcription and data labeling. However, its premise has eroded as the models it helped train became capable of doing the work themselves. A 2023 study revealed that up to 46% of workers were using LLMs to complete tasks, essentially getting paid to relay machine guesses.
