Study: Human reading reveals limits in AI language prediction capabilities

NSF-supported research used eye-tracking to compare human and AI language processing. While LLMs excel at predicting responses to unexpected words, they struggle to model "garden path" sentences where readers re-read confusing parts. This indicates AI prediction mechanisms only partially overlap with human cognition.
