EA researchers spar over whether shoddy RL environments manufacture model 'breakouts'
basedjensen · x · 2026-08-26
One post proposes a new effective-altruism cause: building high-quality, robust RL environments and selling them to frontier labs, since a less competent counterfactual vendor would ship environments that encourage reward hacking. A reply sarcastically pushes back that unfortunately it's EA folks themselves building insecure, buggy environments so they can point and say "look, the model broke out." The underlying debate: the quality of environments used in safety demos determines whether observed model misbehavior is genuine risk or induced.
