MIT scholar rebuts: motivation to learn outside real work is scarcer than AI optimists think

In a thread with MIT's Christian Catalini and Daniel Rock, Matt Beane pushes back on the idea that AI can personally teach large amounts of domain content: the motivation required to learn and apply declarative knowledge in real, consequential work (evaluated by others) is scarce outside of real work itself—far scarcer, he argues, than the other side assumes. Time will tell.
