UC Berkeley Updates CS61A Course with AI Coding Agent Assignment

UC Berkeley’s introductory CS course, CS 61A, has implemented an AI coding agent project, replacing a Scheme language assignment taught since 1986. While the project outline remains similar—building an interpreter to decipher code and produce line art—students will now employ an AI agent to create a code-visualizing application. The curriculum is also shifting from the 1970s-era language Scheme to the modern alternative Gleam.
