If a model can self-improve, couldn't the same mechanism make it self-deteriorate?

A pointed thought experiment: if a model can theoretically self-improve, couldn't the very same mechanism also drive self-deterioration? It highlights the two-way nature of feedback loops in recursive self-improvement—the dynamics that boost capability could equally erode it.
