AI Interpretability Leads to Discovery in Whale Language

Researchers built an 'artificial baby model' that learns language directly from raw sound and trained it to imitate whale speech. By applying interpretability methods to look inside the model, they recovered properties biologists already believed were meaningful and pointed to potential new structures. This represents one of the first cases where AI interpretability directly led to a scientific discovery.
