$12M for one word: AI admaker Icon pivots to selling human-made UGC ads

Icon's founder paid $12,000,000 for the single-word domain icon.com — more than most startups raise in their lifetime. Launching in February 2025 as "the first AI admaker" (paste a URL, get finished ad creative), it raised a $9.2M round led by Founders Fund, with OpenAI's Chief Research Officer participating.

Mid-2025 the site went dark, then returned as "The Human Admaker": real creators, real filming and editing, with AI pushed back to research and analytics. The most expensive domain in adtech now sells exactly what adtech spent three years automating away — 6 human UGC ads for $1,000, delivered in 12–16 days.
