AI interpretability leads to discovery of vowels in sperm whale communication

This research demonstrates a case where AI interpretability directly enabled a scientific discovery in whale communication. The team built an artificial model that learns language directly from raw sound and trained it to imitate sperm whale speech. By inspecting the model's internals, their interpretability method recovered properties known to biologists and highlighted previously unconsidered features. This provided the initial clue that led to the discovery of vowels in sperm whales. Published in Royal Society Open Science.
