OpenAI has paused some frontier reinforcement learning training to ensure alignment, security, and monitoring standards keep pace with new model capabilities. Sam Altman stated that while model progress is extremely rapid, the company will act if capabilities outstrip safety. OpenAI believes in field-wide coordination but will act unilaterally in the meantime, noting that confidence in safety will increasingly set the pace of AI progress.
