AI ad generation startup Icon, backed by Founders Fund and OpenAI, has pivoted back to human creators after a hiatus. The company discovered that AI-generated UGC had a conversion rate of 1 in 87, compared to 1 in 4 for human creators. Despite AI generation costing only $1 per video (vs. $15 for humans), the cost per winning asset was actually higher for AI ($87) than for humans ($60). Icon decided to rebuild around real creators.
