Microsoft paper: Multi-vector retrieval exponentially outperforms single-vector
lateinteraction · x · 2026-08-26
Microsoft Research published a paper titled "Retrieval Needs Multivectors: An Exponential Separation," formally proving that multi-vector embeddings can be exponentially more compact than single-vector ones for ranking documents. This supports the theory that Late-Interaction/Multi-Vector approaches are more powerful than inner product methods.
