OpenAI's first custom inference chip Jalapeño shows huge efficiency gains
Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-08-26
OpenAI revealed the first results from Jalapeño, its custom AI inference chip. It delivers 1.5-1.9x more work per watt, 1.7-3.6x lower end-to-end latency, and up to 4.1x higher performance for interactive workloads across models like DeepSeek R1 670B and Kimi K2.5 1T. AI-assisted design enabled a 9-month turnaround from design to tapeout, with AI-generated implementations running 1.5-1.8x faster than human-written code.
