Opinion: AI produces computation not understanding, math faces meaning crisis
gerardsans · x · 2026-08-26
In a discussion on whether AI solving math problems causes a crisis of meaning, Gerard Sans argues that AI does not produce true understanding but rather computation, similar to AlphaGo's Move 31. Current frontier AI can sample many proofs, a few of which may be verified, but this does not imply they are understood. Sampling is not truth or understanding.
