Musk predicts space-based AI compute will exceed Earth's cumulative total within five years

In a conversation with Patrick Collison, Elon Musk made a radical prediction: within five years, humanity will launch and operate more AI compute in space every year than the cumulative total on Earth — on the order of hundreds of gigawatts per year and rising, eventually capped around 1 terawatt per year by Starship propellant (methane/oxygen) production.
For scale: all data centers on Earth draw 50 GW on average, and the entire US generating capacity is 1,200 GW built over a century. Orbital solar wins on physics — near-continuous sunlight, no clouds, atmosphere, or seasons, so the same panel yields several times a rooftop in Arizona — while skipping land, zoning, environmental review, and grid interconnection queues.
The binding constraint on AI keeps moving: chips, then capital, now power. Musk owns the rocket, the panels, and the chips, putting him in a position to actually build toward the number.
