iEVIP distributes intelligence across the entire extracellular vesicle analysis pipeline

Han Xie and coauthors introduce iEVIP, an integrated system for isolating and analyzing extracellular vesicles — tiny membrane-bound particles that can carry molecular signatures of cancer. Its key idea is distributing intelligence across the whole measurement pipeline:
- During filtration, the system continuously measures transmembrane pressure; when a sustained increase indicates membrane fouling, an adaptive controller triggers reverse-flow pulses to regenerate the membrane instead of blindly following a fixed schedule.
- Isolated vesicles are spread using a blood-smear-inspired nanoscale organization strategy that reduces aggregation and fluorescence overlap before imaging.
- Only after those physical problems are addressed does machine learning enter the pipeline.
