Perplexity hybrid agent system: local models with cloud escalation boost efficiency

Perplexity CEO Arav Srinivas shared a research blog addressing the gap between local and frontier models. The proposed 'advisor escalation' hybrid system allows local agents to escalate to cloud-based frontier models when needed. On Terminal Bench 2.1, this approach lifts the score from 59.6% to 73.0% at $0.415 per rollout, recovering about three-fifths of the performance gap at two-thirds of the cost.
