IBM Open-Sources Granite-4.2-30B: Built-in Chain-of-Thought, 512K Context, Apache 2.0
jacek2023 · reddit · 2026-08-25
IBM released Granite-4.2-30B, the flagship reasoning model of the Granite 4.2 family, under Apache 2.0 for both commercial and research use.
Key capabilities:
- Built-in reasoning: native <think>...</think> chain-of-thought significantly improving math, coding, and multi-step problems
- Flexible thinking modes: switch between full thinking (default), non-thinking, and low-effort within a single model to trade depth vs. latency per query
- Reasoning-augmented tool calling: the model reasons about which tools to invoke and why, yielding more accurate function calls
- 512K context window for long documents, multi-turn conversations, and complex agentic workflows
Architecture: decoder-only dense transformer with GQA (32 attention heads / 8 KV heads), RoPE (θ = 10,000,000), SwiGLU MLP (hidden size 32768), RMSNorm (ε = 1e-5), untied input/output embeddings, bfloat16 precision.
