Maker Michael Hart published a detailed writeup of his low-cost autonomous mapping robot, also discussed on a podcast. Built on the Viam Rover chassis, it swaps the stock webcam for a RealSense D421 stereo depth camera and uses a Radxa X4 as compute (instead of a Raspberry Pi or Jetson Orin), running a full ROS 2 stack: Visual SLAM for mapping and Nav2 for autonomous navigation — no GPS or lidar needed.
He covers real challenges around encoder noise and calibration in detail. The post ends with a full parts list, and all source code is on GitHub — a great example of how accessible autonomous robotics has become.
