Tech discussion: Why it should be 'Late Interaction' not 'Multi-vector'

tomaarsen · x · 2026-08-25

A developer argued that a significant part of the problem is the community's insistence on misnaming the paradigm as "multi-vector retrieval"; it should be called "late interaction". The core issue isn't having one vector, but the scoring function. While MultiVectorEncoder (MVE) is more intuitive than LateInteractionEncoder (LIE), LIE is closer to the model's essence. The hope is that as index sizes shrink, adoption of Late Interaction will grow.
