Localized Editing Might Be GenAI's Sweet Spot: Image Edit Test

Lonelydude014 · reddit · 2026-08-25

The author discovered while testing GPT Image 2 for a rug replacement that modifying just 5% of an image yields nearly undetectable results. To verify, the same photo and prompt were run through four models (GPT Image 2, Nano Banana 2, Seedream V5.0 Pro, Qwen Image 2.0) using Codex and Atlas Cloud MCP.

While outputs varied in tone and texture, all models successfully made the requested change without destroying the photo's realism. The author argues that since 95% of the image is real, the model leverages existing context rather than inventing geometry and lighting from scratch, making the edit harder to spot.

This capability offers significant utility for virtual staging and e-commerce but raises ethical questions about the line between reasonable editing and deceptive modification.
