The DNA of Next-Gen Agents: Separate Intelligence from Continuity
KL_AIC · reddit · 2026-08-25
This post argues that as agents gain the ability to use tools and run long tasks, product optimization must shift from conversation to execution.
Core Hypothesis: Intelligence is provided by the LLM, while continuity is provided by the Harness (scaffolding/orchestration system).
Two Non-Consensus Views:
- Memory should prioritize recoverability over recall: For long tasks, full history can be misleading (e.g., test records becoming invalid after code changes). Memory must ensure the task can resume correctly after interruptions or model swaps.
- Task completion should be evaluated by the Harness, not the model: Completion reflects user intent, not just model capability. Stronger models may absorb the form of scaffolding but cannot internalize task-specific intent.
The article distinguishes between "relationship continuity" (chat products) and "execution continuity" (action agents), arguing they require different state management mechanisms.
