Agents Drive Demand for Search Skills as Building Barriers Drop
hugobowne · x · 2026-08-25
Job market demand for builders who understand search, retrieval, and agentic search has surged over the past 6-12 months.
Historically, serious search was a specialist discipline. Most data scientists and ML engineers focused on recommendation systems or manually curated information. Now, agents allow us to step outside that loop and build the search machine itself. Agents can search, inspect results, reformulate queries, retrieve again, use tools, and reason over evidence.
As agents lower the barrier to building search systems, understanding this process is becoming essential for any builder creating useful agents.
