The funding trap of open source: Lessons from scikit-learn and Probabl

Igor Carron comments on how open source is viewed as a virtue by states and large enterprises because it allows them to avoid procurement budgets (effectively using OPM). He points out that scikit-learn was only funded five to ten years after its utility was proven, and it was a struggle for Probabl to escape this trap. Similarly, Databricks' history shows that without someone trusting those who start or encourage these thesis efforts, such success stories are impossible.
