OpenAI Codex lead: Current agents are transitional; full system integration is the future
xiaohu · x · 2026-08-25
In an interview, OpenAI Codex lead Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux shared key insights:
- DeepMind Buried LMChat: DeepMind had a ChatGPT-like product (LMChat) a year prior but withheld it due to fears of cannibalizing search business.
- Transitional State: Current coding agents require users to manually manage skills, memory, and sub-agents. Tibo believes future AI should autonomously understand user context and goals.
- OpenAI's Culture: The close link between research and product teams, along with a “ship fast, iterate faster” mentality, is OpenAI's key advantage.
- Product Convergence: ChatGPT and Codex are merging into a unified personal AI.
