Robot cuts 12 seconds off 100m time in one year, beating Usain Bolt

The robot 'Tiangong Ultra' clocked 9.39 seconds in a recent race, beating Usain Bolt's 100m world record. Remarkably, the same robot finished the race in 21.50 seconds last August, marking a 12-second improvement in just one year. Its half-marathon time also dropped from 8 hours in January 2025 to 2 hours 40 minutes by April.
The post contrasts human and robotic evolution: humans fight genetics, injury, and aging for incremental gains (97 years for a 1-second cut). Robots, however, improve through iteration loops—actuators upgrade quarterly, gait policies retrain overnight in simulation, and hardware is modified on the fly—demonstrating the exponential speed of machine optimization.
