AI writes code faster, but understanding users is the hard problem AI can't solve

SaaS founder Kyle Gawley argues AI has made writing code faster, but code is only one layer: companies with huge teams and unlimited resources have shipped confusing, bloated products for decades. The hard part—understanding what users need, deciding what not to build, and turning messy real-world problems into simple software—is something AI cannot do.
His advice: if building a new product tomorrow, step one isn't opening Claude but talking to 10 potential users about how they solve the problem today, what frustrates them, and what they've tried—then keeping those users in the loop from day one. AI accelerates implementation; without user understanding you just build the wrong things faster.
