LLMs Internal Competence Estimate Steers Answer Complexity
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-08-25
A new paper reveals that LLMs possess an internal direction for user competence. This estimate drives how the model adjusts answer complexity and even hiring decisions. The research shows that while this competence metric causally mediates behavior, the demographic differences riding on it do not reliably surface as direct discrimination in the output.
