Solving a 60-Year Challenge: AI Model Enables Quasi-Linear Quantum Chemistry Simulations

AnimaAnandkumar · x · 2026-08-25

Researchers present a unified AI model that addresses the scalability challenge of Density Functional Theory (DFT), achieving near-linear scaling with system size. Unlike prior AI approaches that struggle to extrapolate to larger systems, this method uses a novel Fourier neural operator variant to learn the underlying Kohn-Sham equation map. It produces physics-informed, self-consistent results for both molecules and materials in quasi-linear time, opening the door to simulating realistic, expensive systems.
