ChatGPT desktop "Too Many Requests" fix: close the app and wait five minutes
Reggaejunkiedrew · reddit · 2026-08-25
A Reddit user shares a workaround for the ChatGPT desktop app's "Too Many Requests" dialogs: if the popup appears but requests still work, close the desktop app and give it about five minutes.
Their diagnosis: this is not a usage-rate issue — the sidebar conversation list stops loading when it happens, suggesting the desktop app refreshes the list too often and trips a server-side rate limit. Clearing cookies (which signs you out) temporarily resolves it, but the issue returns within minutes of logging back in. The user has reported it as a bug.
