MIT Study: Aging Brains Maintain Language Networks Like LLMs Trained on Lifetime Data

A new study from MIT and Boston University reveals that while executive control networks responsible for memory and problem-solving decline with age, the brain's language processing network remains robust and fully functional in older adults (ages 41–80), showing activity nearly identical to younger adults (17–39).
The research suggests that highly specialized brain regions are more resilient to aging than general cognitive networks. It draws an analogy between aging brains and LLMs: just as models trained on more data gain power, older adults continually build their vocabularies, maintaining or even improving language skills throughout their lifespan.
