Inference dev: a $200 GPT Pro sub packs ~$10,000 of API tokens monthly

Dmitry Rybin, who develops inference systems at work, argues tokens are nearly free rather than subsidized — computable from first principles. He estimates a $200 GPT Pro subscription includes roughly $10,000 worth of API tokens per month, which is plenty for a math professor working on one or two problems.
The mathematician he replied to countered that it is exceedingly unusual for mathematicians to spend more than $1,000 at API prices trying to oneshot a problem — if it can be oneshot, let someone else do it.
