While 18 data centers near Chicago contribute 28% of the city's tax base ($71M), a deeper issue is the undervaluation of these properties. The Cook County assessor argues that data centers built for $500 million are often appealed down to $250 million, shifting the tax burden to local homeowners. Microsoft's Northlake campus, bought for $182M in 2009, received at least $650M in upgrades according to permitting data.
