AWS launches Agent Registry and backs ARD, an open spec for cross-environment agent discovery

AWS introduced AWS Agent Registry (preview) and supports ARD (Agentic Resource Discovery), an open specification tackling the discovery problem as organizations scale agents, MCP servers, and tools.
AWS Agent Registry offers a centralized, searchable catalog for agents, MCP servers, tools, and skills. Core concepts: Registries (catalogs with approval and authorization settings, shareable across an AWS Organization) and Registry Records (metadata describing what a resource is, does, and how to reach it). Workflow: admin creates a registry → publishers submit records → curators approve/reject/deprecate → consumers (humans or agents) search. Enterprise features include a curation workflow, hybrid semantic+keyword search, exposure as a remote MCP endpoint, and IAM/JWT authorization.
ARD is an Apache 2.0 open standard (not a product) for federating discovery across clouds, on-prem, and SaaS—analogous to how DNS federates name resolution: resources described in one shared format and exposed via a common protocol, so publishers describe once and consumers discover everywhere, without bilateral agreements. AWS contributed to the spec and positions ARD as a complement: federate without migrating, discover globally while controlling locally, and enable cross-organizational public catalogs.
