Nature Study: LLM Use Linked to Significant Decline in Linguistic Diversity

A study published in Nature Human Behaviour indicates that the widespread adoption of LLMs as writing assistants is linked to a decline in linguistic diversity. Across three studies spanning seven datasets and over 880,000 texts, researchers found that while LLMs retain core content when polishing and rewriting, they also homogenize writing styles. The variance in writing complexity decreased by a statistically significant 21–50% across datasets and models, interfering with societal and psychological insights derived from language.
